Rostrevor Men’s Shed was founded in 2015. It started as a small group of individuals who shared the same passion for improving men's health and well being through a variety of activities. Over the years, it has grown into a thriving charity with a strong presence in the community.
Absolutely not. Most of the men that attend them are retired but this shouldn’t put anyone off. This is because a life after employment can be difficult and men often feel that they’ve lost their sense of purpose and place in the world. They can miss the routine and camaraderie between colleagues that often comes with working life. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation which can be dangerous for their health and wellbeing. However, recognising that age isn’t the only factor in loneliness and isolation, and that there is more to Men’s Sheds, for example sharing skills, informal learning and enjoyment, Rostrevor Men’s Shed have a mix of ages.
Anyone who shares our values and is interested in improving their health and well being and tackling social isolation can join Rostrevor Men’s Shed. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds and ages.
We are currently open 3 days a week. Saturday between 9am and 2pm is when the majority
No. Our Shed is for men with ‘time on their hands’ wanting to learn new skills, making new friends or you like the idea of helping like minded men in helping your community. You can go to the shed just to chat and have a cuppa, or play board games, or read a book. Arts & crafts are also popular. The range of activities is as broad as the members’ interests.
If you want to learn a new skill or repair something you can usually find another Shedder to help you or give you advice.
We sometimes undertake small projects such as woodwork projects, making hanging baskets or planters, some restoration projects– there may be a waiting list dependant on availability of volunteer members with required skill-sets and existing projects that have already been agreed.
We can’t do any electrical repairs or undertake projects at your home or business.
We are a social enterprise – profits from these commissions help fund our ongoing running costs and are crucial to our operating model. Whilst we offer competitive and fair pricing options, we do require payment for our services to enable our charity to remain operational.
Most definitely yes. Most shedders have had enough experiences of being told what to do or of having to meet deadlines. Autonomy is a very important part of the shed ethos. Sheds are happier when people are doing things they enjoy and want to do willingly. It is for fun, it’s not a job!
Drop us a message here on contact us or leave a message on our Facebook page. One of our Shedder’s will then get in contact and arrange a time for you to visit and see what we are all about.
Membership fees are £25 a year.
Membership fees help to cover the cost of our annual insurance and a tiny bit of our running costs.
In addition to the nominal membership fee, all members throw some loose change into the kitty for tea, coffee etc
We are grateful for all offers of donated materials or equipment, but can only accept items that we are able to use – please contact us in advance to arrange drop-off of any donations.
We are groups of local men, engaged in activities as equals and volunteers. We operate as a membership/volunteer group – we do not have any paid support staff and do not have the capacity to offer a support service or take referrals from other agencies.
Everyone using the shed is responsible for their own safety and their own actions.
Membership of the Shed has major benefits in our members mental health and well being and we encourage new members to attend for that reason.
We encourage you to actively signpost clients who are “Shed Ready”- please advise them to contact us directly.
